One of the highest peaks in Kerala, Agasthyarkoodam gets its name from Agasthya, a legendary Hindu sage who is believed to have offered penance in this region. There is a shrine in this region which is dedicated to the sage. This mountain range is a place of reverence for Hindus and Buddhists. It is considered to be the abode of  Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara.

This hill range is a part of the Western Ghats and is located at an altitude of 6201 ft above sea level. One of the unique aspects of Agasthyakoodam is that it is a paradise for birdwatchers. Many rare varieties of birds have been identified in the region. Also, the locale is home to many species of medicinal herbs. The hill range has been declared as the Agasthya Vanam Biological Park, which covers an area of 23 sq. km. Trekking is yet another attraction that you can enjoy in the area.
